Lighting Techniques – Make Small Spaces Appear Bigger

If you have a small room or area in your house, you can make it look bigger by using a few lighting techniques. For instance, a low ceiling can look higher if you put wall sconces, ceiling bowl lights or plant lights. These lighting fixtures are the perfect accents to a patterned ceiling or fancy crown molding.

If you have little floor space in a room, you can make it look bigger by installing enough task lighting using swing arms, pendants and various other wall lights. To create a subtle effect, install a wall sconce that has a mirrored back. Accentuate built-in tables and magazine racks with floor lamps. If you have a sofa but no end tables, try placing a candlestick lamp on either side of the sofa instead.

Use sconces to create attention grabbing works of art on your wall. Group sconces together. Highlight your favorite photo or painting by using picture lights. If you have narrow hallway lined art pieces or photos hanging, make it look wider with the help of cable track lights that also serve to accentuate the hanging pieces. To add a bit of sophistication to a small area, try hanging a small chandelier or a lantern that has a dimmer switch.
